A Final Word on Sod Grass For San Antonio
First of all, there are advantages and disadvantages to both seeding and laying sod. However, for most people who have no prior experience seeding a lawn, that option would prove much more time consuming and labor intensive than they’d be anticipating. It takes quite a bit of patience to grow a lawn from seed. You must be willing to watch for progress often and keep off the lawn area for as long as it takes for it to get through the active growing phase. That could be anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
Staying off a growing lawn is fairly difficult for families with kids and pets. With sod, the installation process is a matter of hours and you and your family can start enjoying it almost immediately. There are a number of different types of grass to choose from which do well in the Houston area. Below we’ll break down the pros and cons of several varieties which can be purchased and installed as sod.
St. Augustine
Reighley St. Augustine was developed by North Carolina State University and released in 1980. It’s a robust lawn grass that has excellent cold tolerance and relatively good heat tolerance. It is a dark green color and has a thick, carpet-like texture. This grass does require quite a bit of water, but for the Houston area, this should not really be a problem. People tend to appreciate the fact that this variety of St. Augustine does a really good job of choking out weeds.
Some negatives include the fact that St. Augustine tends to attract chinch bugs which secrete a toxin that kills off the grass. It is also prone to Brown Patch fungus during the cooler season. Finally, this grass does grow very rapidly and you’ll have to maintain it so that it doesn’t creep into flower beds or onto sidewalks.
Palmetto St. Augustine
Compared to other varieties of St. Augustine, Palmetto St. Augustine has a finer texture with thinner blades and a more vibrant emerald green color. Other varieties tend to be more of a medium to dark green. Due to it’s softer, finer texture and rich color, Palmetto has become the most sold variety of St. Augustine.
This particular variety of St. Augustine is more shade tolerant compared with others. And even when it does receive less than ideal sunlight per day, it is still able to stay partially established with some patchiness.
The cons for Palmetto St. Augustine are comparable to Reighley St. Augustine, with the main difference being the softer texture of Palmetto and the denser texture of Reighley.
Celebration Bermuda grass
Celebration was originally bred in Australia. It has excellent shade and drought tolerance and is quite tolerant to wear and tear. Add to that it’s superior ability to recover, and you have a very popular pick for home lawns as well as golf courses and sports venues.
This variety of bermuda grass is a deep bluish green color which many people find appealing combined with its dense texture. Celebration Bermuda grass spreads quickly after establishment and easily chokes out weeds.
It does require full sun and tends to produce unsightly seed heads with lack of water. Also due to its fast growth pattern, you will need to have the time and patience to keep up with mowing. Also, like other varieties of bermudagrass, Celebration requires a high amount of fertilizer in order to do its best. It's as prone to certain types of worms and mites like other varieties of bermuda grass as well.
