Whatever lawn grass you ultimately choose, it needs 6 inches of topsoil to serve as an sufficient reservoir for roots and moisture entrapment. The money you spend in a high-quality landscape mix will be paid back many times over in one summer of lawn care and water. Buffalo grass is a native grass and the most drought tolerant turf choice, but it is not well suited for use as a true lawn grass. It does not make a tight sod.
